Best EV Charger for the Audi Q8 e-tron (and SQ8 e-tron): What Works, What to Skip

The Audi Q8 e-tron carries one of the largest batteries in any production EV — 114 kWh gross (106 kWh usable). That's a lot of energy to push through a charging cable every night, and picking the wrong charger means you're leaving range on the table.

Here's what actually matters when choosing a home charger for the Q8 e-tron or SQ8 e-tron.

Know Your Onboard Charger First

The charger you bolt to your wall doesn't determine charging speed on its own. Your car's onboard charger is the bottleneck — it converts AC from the wall unit into DC for the battery.

  • Q8 e-tron (all trims): 11kW onboard charger
  • SQ8 e-tron: 11kW standard, 22kW available (check your build sheet)

The wall unit (EVSE) just supplies AC power. If your EVSE can deliver 11.5kW but your car only accepts 11kW, you get 11kW. If your EVSE only delivers 7.7kW on a 32A circuit, that's all the car gets regardless of its capacity.

For the standard Q8 e-tron, you want a 48A charger on a 60A breaker to hit that 11kW ceiling. A 40A charger on a 50A breaker gets you to 9.6kW — close, but about an hour slower on a full charge cycle.

For the SQ8 with the 22kW option, you'd need an 80A charger on a 100A breaker to approach 19.2kW on single-phase 240V. That's a significant electrical install, but it cuts charge time nearly in half.

What to Skip

32A chargers. They deliver 7.7kW, which wastes roughly 30% of the Q8 e-tron's onboard charger capacity. With a 106 kWh battery, that adds 2–3 extra hours per full charge compared to a 48A unit.

The included Audi portable charger. It works for emergencies, but it's typically limited to 32A and has a short cable. A dedicated wall unit is more reliable and faster.

Cheap no-name units on Amazon. EV chargers handle serious current for hours at a time. Stick with brands that have UL listing and actual warranty support.

Installation Notes

For a 48A charger (recommended for most Q8 e-tron owners):

  • 60A dedicated breaker in your panel
  • 6-gauge wire (copper) for runs under 50 feet
  • Hardwired connection for full 48A output, or NEMA 14-50 at 40A
  • Budget $300–$800 for electrician installation depending on panel distance
